Toronto-based, science content-focused media company Underknown has added reams of content to its Popular Science FAST channel, created via a partnership with the U.S. magazine, in time for its official launch this month.
The channel, which is Underknown’s first venture into FAST, offers live coverage of every significant rocket launch in the U.S. from NASA, Space X Blue Origin and others, along with NASA Spaceflight’s weekly Starbase Update. It also offers repackaged content from Underknown’s science-based YouTube channels such as What If? (8.56 million subscribers), How to Survive (1.93 million subscribers) and Aperture (2.41 million subscribers).
The channel had a soft launch in November 2024, but “60% to 70%” of the content – including the NASA livestreams and YouTube channels Hacksmith Industries (15.3 million subscribers) and Complexly (132,000 subscribers) – was finalized across the week of March 11, Underknown co-founder and CEO Steve Hulford (pictured) tells Playback Daily.
Popular Science is available globally on services such as Sling Freestream, Fubo and Local Now. In Canada it is also available on Plex and in the U.S. on Vizio WatchFree+. The company is actively pursuing other platforms, says Hulford.
The Popular Science brand is licensed under Miami-based Recurrent Ventures. L.A.-based AcTVe FAST Channels is aiding in overseeing the launch.
