Three programmers depart TIFF, team realigned

Various programmers have taken on new remits along with three departures ahead of the festival’s 50th edition.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has announced a raft of updates to its roster of programmers.

Former Special Presentations programmer Jane Schoettle, Canadian programmer Norm Wilner and Nataleah Hunter-Young, international programmer for Africa and Arab West Asia, will not be returning to their roles, according to the newsletter.

Playback Daily has reached out to TIFF, which offered no comment as to the reason for the departures.

Following the February appointment of Jason Anderson as lead programmer for Canadian features at TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten ceremony, the festival announced several updates in a March 20 industry newsletter from chief programming officer Anita Lee.

Jason Ryle, who currently programmes global Indigenous cinema and films from Australia and New Zealand, is adding responsibility for films from the U.K. and Ireland. Peter Kuplowsky, who is in charge of programming Midnight Madness, will add American independent features to his remit. Former associate programmer for Short Cuts Sonja Baska will now co-lead the programme.

Lastly, Lee and director of programming Robyn Citizen will be in charge of Special Presentations.

TIFF’s 50th will run from Sept. 4 to 14.
