New York-based production companies Cartuna and Dweck Productions have acquired North American rights to Grace Glowicki’s horror comedy Dead Lover (pictured), from Toronto prodco Featured Creatures.
The deal is the first for Cartuna x Dweck, a joint distribution venture between the two New York prodcos. Cartuna launched its distribution arm last year with Dead Lover representing its first all-rights deal. Following the film’s Texas premiere at SXSW, the deal was negotiated between Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms and Joe Yanick of New York and L.A.-based Yellow Veil Pictures, the film’s sales agent, on behalf of the filmmakers and Cartuna co-founder and CEO James Belfer on behalf of Cartuna x Dweck.
With the deal freshly penned and more festival screenings on the horizon, a date for a North American theatrical release has yet to be set, a spokesperson for the film told Playback Daily. The film had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, as part of its Midnight program.
The horror comedy follows a lonely gravedigger, portrayed by the Edmonton-born Glowicki (Tito), who finally meets her dream man. However, when he drowns at sea she goes to extreme lengths to resurrect him.
Besides directing and starring in the film, Glowicki served as a co-writer alongside fellow star Ben Petrie (The Heirloom). Petrie, Glowicki and Yona Strauss (Quickening) are the film’s producers and founders of Featured Creatures.
Leah Doz (New Eden) and puppeteer and comedian Lowen Morrow also star.
