Khaled Sabbour’s Toronto-based independent distribution outfit New Mountain Films has acquired its first feature, Jasmin Gordon’s debut The Courageous (maximage).
The French-language film (pictured) will release theatrically in Canada this spring, starting in Quebec on April 11 and Toronto on April 18. The deal was brokered between Sabbour and the film’s producers, Brigitte Hofer and Cornelia Seitler, a spokesperson for the film told Playback Daily.
The Courageous, from the Swiss-American Gordon, follows a mother battling inner demons while fighting to secure a future for her children. It stars Ophelia Kolb, Paul Besnier, Arthur Devaux and Jasmine Kalisz Saurer.
The film had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Discovery program.
“Jasmin Gordon’s directorial vision is both bold and deeply human,” said Sabbour in a statement. “This is exactly the kind of film we want to champion—one that sparks conversation, resonates emotionally and leaves a lasting impact.”
New Mountain launched early September 2024, with Sabbour (who is also the founder of prodco and distributor East Liberty Entertainment) at its head and former Entertainment One (eOne) exec Frank Mendicino leading its marketing strategy.
