L.A.-based TGC Global Entertainment (TGC GE) has sold the reality competition format behind CBC series Canada’s Ultimate Challenge to ITV Studios Nordics.
The format, renamed as The League of Extraordinary… for global buyers, takes teams of strangers and places them in physically and mentally demanding challenges based around the geography of the respective nation.
ITV Studios Nordics has optioned the format for Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. The deal was brokered by Anna Rydin, managing director of ITV Studios Sweden on behalf on ITV Studios Nordics and Cecilia Ingebrigtsen, TGC GE’s sales and acquisitions agent for Europe and the Nordics.
Canada’s Ultimate Challenge is produced by Boat Rocker-owned Insight Productions and the Gurin Company. Erin Brock, John Brunton and Mark Lysakowski are executive producers for Insight while Phil Gurin is the EP for the Gurin Company.
“We saw the premise of the show, creating a nationwide obstacle course, delivers some unexpected, jaw-dropping moments in the wild and the authenticity of the both the settings and the people who are genuinely doing their best to win, creates a dramatic result with real high stakes,” said Rydin in a statement.
According to a release, the first two seasons of Canada’s Ultimate Challenge (14 x 60 minutes) have consistently ranked in the CBC’s top 10 since its 2023 premiere.
TGC GE, the distribution company created by format veteran Gurin, launched the format internationally at MIPCOM last October. Along with the Nordics, The League of Extraordinary… has also been optioned for Germany by Leonine Studios’ Madame Zheng Production.
A third season of Canada’s Ultimate Challenge is set to debut on Feb. 27 on CBC and CBC Gem.
