The Queen of My Dreams ties twice at 2024 DGC Awards

The Directors Guild of Canada named the film and TV winners in a virtual ceremony on Oct. 28.

Fawzia Mirza’s The Queen of My Dreams (pictured) and Marie Clements’ limited series Bones of Crows led the winners at this year’s Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) Awards.

The Queen of My Dreams (Shut Up & Colour Pictures, Baby Daal Productions; pictured) tied for two awards, including Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Feature Film.

The film explores the generational gap between a conservative Pakistani Muslim mother and her daughter through a Bollywood lens, while its co-winner, Karen Knox’s We Forgot to Break Up (Motel Pictures), tells the story of a fictional band as they chase stardom in Toronto.

The awards were presented online on Oct. 28 and announced by DGC members Anthony Q. Farrell and Amy Jo Johnson.

The Queen of My Dreams also tied with Charles Uwagbai’s Kenya-set drama Kipkemboi in the production design for a limited budget category.

CBC limited series Bones of Crows won two series awards, including Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Movies for Television or Mini-Series and production design in a dramatic or mini-series.

Other winners at the DGC awards include Chelsea McMullan, who won the Allan King Award for Excellence in a Documentary for her film Swan Song (Visitor Media) and Kaniehtiio Horn, who won the Jean-Marc Vallée DGC Discovery Award for her film Seeds (Carpe Dee Yum Productions, New Real Films).

Alyson Richards won Best Short Film for I Was Here; Matt Lyon was awarded for picture editing in a feature for his work on Jeff Chan’s Code 8: Part II (Collective Pictures); and Peter Denes and Steve Taylor took home the picture editing in a documentary award for Mike Downie’s The Tragically Hip: No Dress Rehearsal (Fully and Complete Productions).

Gloria Tong won the best picture editing award for a comedy or family series for Crave’s Bria Mack Gets a Life (New Metric Media).

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Dramatic Series went to Amanda Tapping and her team for the Netflix series Dead Boy Detectives; Tig Fong and his team won achievement in a comedy series for the FX series What We Do in the Shadows; and Winnifred Jong won achievement in a family series for Apple TV+’s Jane (Sinking Ship Entertainment).

Lastly, Best Sound Editing in a Comedy or Family Series went to Janice Ierulli, Mark Shnuriwsky, Matthew Hussey, Sue Fawcett, Michael Legedza, Joe Wazana and Simon Miminis for their work on Nelvana’s YTV and Hulu series The Hardy Boys (Nelvana, Lambur Productions).

The DGC Impact Award went to Nicole Close for leadership in charitable endeavours. Close started the Saltwatercure Fund which raises money for people being treated for and recovering from breast cancer.
