Los Angeles-based World of Wonder has acquired the Canadian short-form series I Hate People, People Hate Me as its first scripted project.
The 6 x 15-minute dark comedy is created by comedian Bobbi Summers (pictured) and produced by Toronto’s LoCo Motion Pictures. It will stream on World of Wonder’s SVOD service, WOW Presents Plus in 2025.
I Hate People, People Hate Me follows two friends, played by Summers and Lily Kazimiera, as they navigate the queer community in Toronto. Canadian singer Bif Naked also appears in a guest role.
The series premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival as part of the festival’s Now section for indie episodic series. It debuted on CBC Gem on Nov. 7, 2023, earning four Canadian Screen Award nominations.
Executive producers on the series are Lauren Corber (How to Buy a Baby), Evan Dell’Aquila (A Kid From Somewhere) and Lisa Filipelli (The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives). Financial support was provided from the Independent Production Fund’s (IPF) and the Canada Media Fund’s Development Packaging Program, as well as IPF’s Short Form Series Production Program. It also received production support from the Bell Fund and Ontario Creates.
The series marks Summers’ debut as a creator, head writer and lead actor. He also wrote and performed an original soundtrack for the show under the stage name “Peachy-CC.”
“Bobbi Summers’ voice and vision is so hilariously unique, when we saw the series we knew we had to bring it to audiences worldwide,” said World of Wonder co-founders Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey in a statement.
