Toronto’s Black Fawn Distribution has acquired the Canadian rights to retro horror film The Last Video Store.
The film is directed by Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford, with Rutherford and Joshua Roach co-writing the script. Produced by Laurence Gendron of Genco Pictures and Greg Jeffs of NJC Picture Company, it follows a young woman who gives a cursed tape to her local video store and unwittingly awakens an array of cinematic villains.
The Last Video Store will have its theatrical release later this month, beginning on Oct. 24 at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver, before hitting additional locations in Calgary, Edmonton and Hamilton, Ont. The film will also screen at the Forest City Film Festival in London, Ont. on Oct. 25 and the Hellifax Horror Fest in Halifax on Nov. 3.
The film will be available on Blu-ray in early 2025 and will be part of Black Fawn’s limited edition Blacklist package series. A VOD release to be announced at a later date. U.S. and U.K. rights are held by British distributor Arrow Video.
“Black Fawn Distribution has been in our sights since our first meeting at the Frontieres pitch,” said Jeffs in a statement. “They understood the spirit of The Last Video Store better than anyone and we are beyond thrilled to be able to take this lil’ monster out with them.”
