Samora Smallwood directs first series with Coming Home

The romantic comedy series begins production in Grimsby, Ont. on Saturday.

Canadian writer, actor and producer Samora Smallwood (The Way Home) is marking her series directorial debut with her rom-com Coming Home.

The 4 x 20-minute series is produced for Bell Fibe TV1 by Smallwood’s Toronto-based prodco Hold One Entertainment. Production will get underway on Saturday (Oct. 12) in Grimsby, Ont. and wrap on Oct. 18, Smallwood told Playback Daily. She created the series and directs all episodes.

Smallwood, who won a Best Lead Actress at the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards for the thriller Death She Wrote, stars in Coming Home as a Hollywood actor and influencer whose life crumbles when she catches her husband cheating. Following that, she returns to her hometown and moves back in with her parents.

Also starring is Hold One partner Robert Ifedi (Queen of the Morning Calm; pictured left) along with Kevin Hanchard (Orphan Black), Karen LeBlanc (The Kings of Napa), Paula Brancati (Dark Oracle), Susan Coyne (Hell of a Summer) and Naomi Snieckus (Gatekeepers).

The project is produced by Smallwood and Ifedi along with David M. James (Kitty Mammas) from Brampton, Ont.-based Nameless Films and Sabrina Laidman (Burden) for Hamilton, Ont.-based KalKaden Productions. Producer and actor Tommy James Murphy (Recall) from RavinMurph Pictures is the executive producer. Bell Fibe TV1 is a distributor and funding partner.
