Deals: 9 Story, 7 Palms, APTN, Cinema Politica

9 Story sells and secures series ahead of MIPJunior, CBC and 7 Palms acquire Jessica Hinkson's Sara and more.

Dublin-headquartered 9 Story Distribution has secured several new sales for its animated comedy Open Season: Call of Nature.

The 52 x 11-minute series based on characters from the 2006 Sony Pictures Animation film has been licensed to DRTV in Denmark, RTS in Switzerland, AMC Networks for Central and Eastern Europe, Canal Panda in Portugal and RTÉ in Ireland.

Other distribution deals for Open Season: Call of Nature include Paramount Media Networks for the U.K. and Italy; Tubi TV, Roku and XUMO for the U.S.; ETV in South Africa; and PCCW for Hong Kong and Macao, according to a release.

The series premiered earlier this year on Family Channel in Canada, on ABC in Australia on Discovery Kids in Latin America, on the Disney Channel in Germany and on France Télévisions.

The series, for children aged six to 11 was produced by Toronto’s 9 Story Media Group and Brown Bag Films with Sony Pictures Animation. It follows the Open Season characters as they discover an abandoned summer camp.

9 Story Distribution International has also picked up the worldwide rights to two animated series from the U.K’s Snipple Originals, The Woohoos! and The Singalings, according to a release.

The WooHoos! (52 x 7 minutes) is a comedy series for preschoolers that follows a puffin, wolfhound, highland bull and a hare as they explore the natural world around them. The series was commissioned by Milkshake! and is set to premiere in the U.K. in November.

The Singalings (26 x 5 minutes) is a musical comedy for young audiences. Each episode begins with a song and features three curious aliens. The series currently airs in the U.K. on Sky Kids.

9 Story will be showcasing both series at MIPJunior from Oct. 18 to 20.

7 Palms

CBC and 7 Palms Entertainment have inked distribution deals for the short drama Sara from C’mon Mort Productions and Hello, Darling Pictures.

CBC has acquired the short film for its Canada Reflections program and CBC Gem where the film will broadcast and begin streaming respectively on Nov. 1.

For the U.S.-based 7 Palms, the deal covers global broadcast and streaming distribution rights, excluding Canada.

The short film is written and directed by Jessica Hinkson (Joey). It stars Samora Smallwood as a woman who finds the strength to face her greatest fear with the help of strangers.

APTN

APTN has acquired the Blackfoot (Siksika) language version of Taxam Films’ Telus original feature documentary Aitamaako’tamisskapi Natosi: Before the Sun, for its new APTN Languages channel with the premiere set for Oct. 19.

The English-language version will be broadcast on APTN on the same day.

The documentary directed by Nuxalk filmmaker Banchi Hanuse follows a young Siksika woman as she prepares for one of the most dangerous horse races, the Indian Relay.

The film had its world premiere at the Big Sky Documentary Festival in 2023 where it won the Big Sky Award.

Fairy Creek

Montreal-based Cinema Politica has acquired the distribution rights to Understory Films’ Fairy Creek.

The documentary feature directed by Jen Muranetz tells the story of one of the largest acts of civil disobedience in Canada’s history. It depicts the lengths activists were willing to go to protect one of B.C.’s last old-growth forests at Ada’itsx or Fairy Creek.

The film will have its world premiere at the Planet in Focus International Film festival on Oct. 17.
