Deals: Motion 58, CBC, Spin Master, Cineflix Rights

Angela’s Shadow secures distribution ahead of its VIFF premiere, CBC acquires The Swap, and more.

Dr. Jules Arita Koostachin’s feature Angela’s Shadow has been acquired by Vancouver-based prodco and distributor Motion 58 ahead of its Oct. 2 world premiere at the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF).

The company is handling Canadian distribution and international sales for Angela’s Shadow (Visjuelles Productions), with a planned theatrical run in 2025.

The sophomore feature is written, directed and produced by Koostachin and co-written with Steve Neufeld. The cast includes Sera-Lys McArthur (Outlander), Matthew Kevin Anderson (Never Let Go), Renae Morriseau (North of 60), Mahiigan Koostachin (MisTik) and Asivak Koostachin (Duster).

The film focuses on a young couple in the 1930s with a baby on the way who embark on a short trip north to the Cree community of KiiWeeTin to visit the titular Angela’s childhood nanny, only to be harassed by a mysterious shadow figure. It is the second film in a trilogy that follows three sets of interconnected Cree characters.

CBC

CBC has acquired the three-part documentary series The Swap (3 x 60 minutes) out of Australia, which will have its North American premiere on CBC Gem on Oct. 2.

Directed by Jo Siddiqui, the show follows 12 students and families in an experimental school swap. It is produced for SBS Television by Southern Pictures.

Spin Master

Spin Master has signed several new broadcast and licensing deals for its preschool series Vida the Vet (52 x 11 minutes). ABC (Australia), Cartoonito (Australia and New Zealand), RTÉ (Ireland) and RTVE Clan (Spain) have acquired the toon about a 10-year-old vet who takes care of woodland creatures.

In consumer products news, licensing agencies WildBrain CPLG (U.K. and Europe), Mediogen (Israel) and Redibra (Brazil) will represent the brand, and Hachette has come on board as a global publishing partner, with initial book releases planned in the U.K. and France next fall.

Cineflix Rights

Cineflix Rights has closed deals with two Latin American broadcasters for 65 hours of Property Brothers (Cineflix Productions).

The Costa Rican network Teletica has acquired seasons three and four, with Uruguay’s Canal 4 acquiring season five. They become the latest Free TV networks to buy the franchise after TVN Chile.

Daniel Rodriguez, Cineflix Rights’ sales consultant for Latin America and Hispanic U.S., said in a statement that deals are close to finalized with broadcasters in Mexico, Colombia and Brazil.
