CMF invests $10M via Program for Racialized Communities

The latest round of funding is supporting 23 English- and French-language projects.

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has invested more than $10 million to 23 film, documentary and TV projects through its Program for Racialized Communities (PRC).

The program supports English- and French-language audiovisual projects from companies that are owned and controlled by Black and/or racialized producers.

More than $6.7 million has been allocated to 16 English-language projects, including 11 docs, three children and youth projects and two drama features.

Among the 11 supported docs are Oya Media Group’s This Land Of Ours and Gay Agenda’s Untitled Queer Elders Project, each receiving $550,000. Also picking up support were the docs The Gymnasts of Machar Colony from Akelo Media ($449,878), North Korea’s Joy Division from Fathom Film ($439,000) and Attria Média’s Big Little Things ($453,105).

The three English-language children and youth titles each received $550,000 for second seasons: TVOKids’ Galapagos X (Big Bad Boo Studios), CBC Kids’ Go Togo (Gazelle Automations) and CBC Gem’s Gangnam Project (Pillango Productions, Aircraft Pictures).

The two drama features are Lupe Q and the Galactic Earworms (Spitshine Flicks) from writer-director Javier Badillo, receiving $750,000; and A Trip to Ottawa (CaribbeanTales) from writer-director-producer Frances-Anne Solomon, picking up $665,000.

Another $3.4 million has been allocated to seven French-language projects, including four dramas and three docs.

Quebec prodco Productions Jumelage received PRC support for two of the four selected dramas, with season two of Crave’s Double jeu (Productions Jumelage) receiving $750,000 and season three of Ici Tout.tv’s Lakay Nou picking up $687,969. The other two dramas are La Recette du bonheur (Majika Pictures) with $286,352, and En Scène! (Bel Ange Moon Productions) with $615,217.

Rounding out the selections are the three French-language docs: Voir l’art autrement (Pimiento Médias) with $438,672; Le Serment d’Hippocrate (Les Films Nadiaz) with $424,289; and Mon oncle Édouard (Quatre Par Quatre Films) with $237,501.

The jury for the English-language projects submitted to PRC included Abdul Malik, Erica Meus-Saunders, Julie Hackett, Ravida Din, Ryan Logan and Tristan Barrocks. The French-language PRC jury included Anik Magny, Anthony Koka, Evangeline Kabuya and Katia Morales.
