The federal government has invested $90,000 to support the expansion of Canadian-owned streaming service JustWatchMe.tv via Creative Export Canada.
Lena Metlege Diab, member of Parliament for Halifax West, announced the investment on Friday (Sept. 13) at the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF).
The two-year funding will help operator Capital Motion Picture Group expand JustWatchMe.tv to regions such as the U.K., U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
The funding will be used to develop an export plan and marketing strategy, and support the company’s attendance to domestic and international markets and film festivals such as Berlin’s European Film Market, Marché du Film in Cannes, AIFF and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
JustWatchMe.tv is a hybrid AVOD and SVOD platform that features an array of Canadian and international films.
Capital Motion Picture Group announced during TIFF that it had acquired several film titles via deals with distributors such as the National Film Board of Canada, levelFILM, Shoreline Entertainment and Canadian International Pictures.
The films include the 2021 film Scarborough from directors Shasha Nakhai and Rich Williamson, which won Best Motion Picture at the Canadian Screen Awards in 2022; Canadian classics including as Don Owen’s Nobody Waved Good-bye and Larry Kent’s The Bitter Ash; and U.S. films such as The Peanut Butter Falcon, The Assistant and The Last Black Man in San Francisco.
Michael Dobbin, Capital Motion Picture Group’s managing director, said the funding will help “countless content creators, filmmakers and artists in Canada to reach new audiences.”
