Ricardo Trogi’s 1995, the latest installment in Quebec filmmaker’s series of autobiographical features, grossed $701,729 during its first five days in theatres.
The film is screening in 77 theatres, on 97 screens across Quebec and New Brunswick, according to distributor Immina Films, which disclosed the box office results on Monday (Aug. 5).
This is the fourth film in the filmmaker’s series, which began with 1981 in 2009, followed by 1987 in 2014. The third film, 1991, was the highest-grossing Canadian film in the 2018 box office, earning more than $3 million. The three films were previously produced by Go Films, which was acquired by Sphere Films in 2018.
In 1995, Jean-Carl Boucher (pictured) reprises the series’ lead role, a fictionalized version of Trogi who embarks on a journey to shoot 20 short films around the world as a contestant on a Radio-Canada reality series.
The film is Trogi’s ninth feature and is produced by Marie-Claude Poulin of Sphere Films. Immina Films is the distributor in Canada, with Amuz Distribution handling international sales.
Production on the film is supported by SODEC, Telefilm Canada, Radio-Canada, the Quebecor Fund, as well as provincial and federal tax credits.
Immina Films president Patrick Roy said in a statement that the turnout has seen Quebec audiences of all ages, adding that the film has received flowing reviews, with viewers already calling for a sequel.
