Knowledge Network doc Inay to world premiere at AAIFF

New York's Asian American International Film Festival has also set Fawzia Mirza's The Queen of My Dreams as its closing film.

K nowledge Network documentary Inay (Mama) will make its world premiere at the Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF) in New York in August.

The one-hour doc is produced and directed by Vancouver’s Thea Loo and examines the intergenerational trauma of Filipino Canadians from the impact of the immigration pathways that kept many children from their mothers. It was filmed in Ontario and B.C.

Priscilla Galvez serves as executive producer, while Natalie Murao is associate producer.

Inay (Mama) is produced by No More Productions in association with Knowledge Network, the Canada Media Fund and The Cinematheque. It will have its world premiere at AAIFF on Aug. 4 and is slated to debut on Knowledge Network in 2025.

Additionally, Nova Scotia-raised director Fawzia Mirza’s The Queen of My Dreams will close AAIFF on Aug. 11.

The film follows a young woman who travels to Pakistan after the sudden death of her father, told in parallel with her mother’s memories of her youth in Karachi and immigration to Nova Scotia. It is produced by Jason Levangie and Marc Tetreault of Halifax-based Shut Up & Colour Pictures alongside Mirza and Andria Wilson Mirza of Baby Daal Productions.

The Queen of My Dreams had its Canadian theatrical release on March 22. The film has been sold to several territories, including the U.K. and Ireland. 

The Asian American International Film Festival runs from Aug. 1 to 11.
