Re: Uniting, True Survivors lead 2024 Leo Awards winners

The annual B.C. film and TV industry awards took place on July 6 and 7 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver.

The drama film Re: Uniting (pictured) and the short doc True Survivors led the winners for the 2024 Leo Awards in Vancouver.

The annual awards celebrating excellence in film and television in B.C. were held across two ceremonies on July 6 and 7 at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver.

Re: Uniting (Flat Head Films) picked up six awards in total, including Best Motion Picture and dual writing and directing wins for filmmaker Laura Adkin. The film also picked up Best Lead Performance in the film category for Michelle Harrison, while Carmen Moore won Best Supporting Performance in the category. Re: Uniting also won the Best Casting award for film.

Best Short Documentary went to The Nature of Things doc True Survivors (Handful of Films), which also won six awards overall. Sarika Cullis-Suzuki picked up two awards, Best Screenwriting and Best Host, in the category, with the short doc also picking up honours for cinematography, picture editing and score.

Discovery Canada’s Highway Thru Hell (Great Pacific Media) took home four prizes overall, including Best Information, Lifestyle or Reality Series, as well as honours for sound, picture editing and screenwriting.

CBC limited series Bones of Crows (Marie Clements Media, Screen Siren Pictures, Grana Productions) led the winners in the Dramatic Series category with three awards overall, including casting, costume design, and Best Direction for Marie Clements.

CTV’s medical drama Transplant (Sphere Media) won the Best Dramatic Series award, with Joseph Kay and Rachel Langer picking up the award for screenwriting.

APTN’s Yukon Harvest (Rogue River Films) won Best Documentary Series, as well as best musical score, while the Best Feature Length Documentary award went to Altona (Foreshadow Films, Langer Films). The feature doc also won screenwriting, directing and picture editing honours for the Affolter Brothers.

The Leo Awards are held by the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia. The full list of winners is available on the awards website.
