The ongoing discussion between the Racial Equity Media Collective (REMC) and the CBC continues with the news that the unnamed production executive from the documentary unit, who was the subject of a formal complaint by REMC last February, has been reassigned.
According to a release from the REMC, “a senior CBC representative has now informed us that as of June 20, 2024, this individual has transitioned to a non-editorial role within another department at CBC and will not be returning to the CBC documentary team.”
On June 13, Playback Daily reported on the CBC’s response to the June 6 open letter co-published by REMC and the Documentary Organization of Canada, that accused a production executive in the pubcaster’s documentary unit of posting numerous discriminatory and factually incorrect social media posts about Muslims, Palestine, and Palestinians.
The June 13 letter from CBC/Radio-Canada president & CEO Catherine Tait stated, “Creating a safe space for our staff to share their opinions and lived experiences is crucial to cultivating an inclusive workplace environment where employees are heard, respected and supported.”
In the CBC letter, Tait made no direct mention of the production executive or of the formal complaint.
“Though we continue to harbour broader concerns, this is a welcome development,” Julian Carrington, managing director, REMC said in a statement. “From the outset of our engagement with CBC, we have maintained that the community’s trust can only be regained via concrete action. CBC’s decision to remove this individual from an editorial role is just such an action—and an essential one.”
Playback Daily reached out to the CBC for comment on this development but had not heard back by press time.
