The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has revealed the first honourees for its 2024 Tribute Awards.
Oscar-nominated actor Amy Adams (pictured, left) will receive the TIFF Tribute Performer Award, while iconic Canadian filmmaker and screenwriter David Cronenberg (pictured, centre) will be recognized with the Norman Jewison Career Achievement Award.
Award-winning actor and producer Sandra Oh (pictured, right) will serve as the inaugural Tribute Awards honorary chair.
“In the five years that TIFF has been honouring such standout talent as Joaquin Phoenix, Michelle Yeoh, Jessica Chastain, Chloe Zhao, Taika Waititi and Ari Wegner on their road to further awards success, we’ve been inspired to watch our Tribute Awards gala grow into a must-attend event,” said TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey.
“This year, we’re thrilled to welcome the incomparable Sandra Oh as the inaugural honorary Chair of the 2024 Tribute Awards. She joins our first-announced honourees, Amy Adams and David Cronenberg, in what promises to be another singular, sparkling night during the Festival. We’re grateful that artists of this stature will gather in Toronto to help TIFF turn the spotlight on increasing inclusion throughout our industry.”
The sixth annual Tribute Awards will take place on Sunday, September 8 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, and honours the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements. The Awards are TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser, with 2024 proceeds going towards the Festival’s Every Story Fund, which champions diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in film.
The Festival also announced six titles that will unspool during the Gala and Special Presentation programs for this, the 49th edition of the Festival.
The films include a revealing look at legendary perform Elton John in Elton John: Never Too Late; the Korean film Harbin, which stars Hyun Bin, Lee Dong-wook, Park Jeong-min, and Jeon Yeo-been; as well as The Life of Chuck, a film based on the 2020 Stephen King short story of the same name that stars Tom Hiddleston.
Also screening is Rez Ball, a coming-of-age film about Indigenous basketball produced by LeBron James; The Wild Robot, an animated film starring Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o; and the dark comedy Nightbitch, which features this year’s TIFF Tribute Performer Award winner, Amy Adams.
TIFF ’24 runs September 5 to 15.
