Steve J. Adams and Sean Horlor’s documentary Satan Wants You (pictured) won the $25,000 Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content at the 2024 Rockie Awards International Program Competition on Tuesday.
Satan Wants You (Nootka Street Film Company, Grand Scheme Productions, 666 Films), which explores the so-called “satanic panic” of the 1980s, picked up the honour after being ranked as the top Canadian production. The awards program was held during the Banff World Media Festival (BANFF) and hosted by Late Bloomer star Jasmeet Raina. The competition is juried by a panel of more than 150 international industry professionals and saw participation from 30 countries, featuring 155 nominees from 19 countries.
The Grand Jury Prize, awarded to the highest-scoring title in the competition, was won by HBO’s The Last of Us, which also picked up best Drama Series: English Language. The Drama Series: Non-English Language award went to Spanish series La Mesías. The Comedy Series: English Language award went to U.S. series Poker Face, while Série Plus’ Les Bombes (Sovimage) won best Comedy Series: Non-English Language.
Les Bombes also won the Prix Francophone honour.
Canadian titles also winning top honours include TVA’s Wild Cooks (Avanti-Toast), which won best Reality Series, Weirdwood Manor Vol. 2 – Rise of the Therimancer (Relish Studios, Wasabi Entertainment) which won best in interactive children and youth content and two shorts, The Flying Sailor (NFB), which won best Short Film, and The Fades of Papineau (Trio Orange), which won best Short Form Fiction Series and also picked up the Emerging Talent Prize for its director Emilie Mannering.
In the podcast stream, Radio-Canada OHdio’s The Other Side of the Story took the top honour in the non-fiction category.
Productions from the U.K. racked up the most wins this year with 13 awards, followed by the U.S. at 10 and Canada at nine.
Award winners from the U.K. include BBC’s The Graham Norton Show (Comedy & Variety), Tabby McTat (Animation: Preschool), Horrible Histories (Live Action: Children), Scandalous: Phone Hacking on Trial (Crime & Investigative), Out of the Shadows: Born from Rape (Short Form Non-Fiction Series), The Shamima Begum Story (Social Issues & Current Affairs), Gods of Tennis (Sports Documentary), Men Up (Feature Length Film), and Best Interests (Limited Series). Also among the U.K. winners are the feature doc Otto Baxter: Not A F**ing Horror Story (Arts & Culture) and Sky’s Lockerbie (History & Biography).
The U.K./Italy copro The Sound Collector picked up the honour in the Animation: Children category.
Other than The Last of Us and Poker Face, U.S. productions picking up awards included Fox’s The Masked Singer (Competition Series & Game Shows) and Family Guy (Animated Series), Hulu’s Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi (Lifestyle), the short doc Deep Sky (Science & Technology), Audible’s The Sesame Street Podcast with Foley and Friends (Podcast: Fiction).
The U.K. and U.S. wins include the U.K./U.S./France/Germany copro Planet Earth III (Environmental & Wildlife).
Rounding out the list of winners is a series from Belgium, Boris, which won best Docuseries, and Sofiy and Her War from Taiwan, which won best Live Action: Youth honour.
