Montreal-based prodcos Trio Orange and Tobo Studio came out on top of this year’s exclusively French-Canadian field at the Youth Media Alliance’s 2024 Awards of Excellence, which took place yesterday at Radio-Canada in Montreal.
In the Best Television Series or Web Series category, Trio Orange won a total of three awards: two for live-action educational series Curium (ICI Radio Canada Télé) and one for Bizarroscope (TV5 Unis). Animation house Tobo Studio was also a multiple trophy winner, with Frida, c’est moi (Télé-Québec) and Dounia season two (pictured, Télé-Québec) scoring two wins each.
Kids voted for their favorite shows in the Public’s Favorite Prize category, and Féeli tout (Les Productions Rivard/TFO) came out on top with two- to five-year-olds, while the six to 12s chose Frida c’est moi and the 13-plus crowd selected Curium.
Three individuals were also honored with specific awards that members of the industry voted on. Veteran producer Johane Landry (CLASH, Max et Livia) received a special Career Dedicated to Excellence award. Landry has been producing kids content for 23 years at companies such as VRAK.TV (owned by Astral Media) and Bell Media. In 2020, she joined Télé-Québec’s kids team as head of content.
Meanwhile, the Excellence Award for Youth Personality went to musician Mehdi Cayenne, who educates young Francophones through his music and TV work. And the Discovery Prize, which recognizes a new talent just getting started in their kids content career, went to Anaïs Cadorette-Bonin. She’s been a family entertainer at the Just for Laughs Festival and has starred in kids TV series such as Télé-Québec’s L’aventure du Monde des mondes and ICI ICI Télé’s Famille Magique.
The awards ceremony also paid tribute to 10 previously announced industry icons who have helped the YMA and the domestic kids content industry it serves grow over the last 50 years.
More information on the YMA Awards is available on the organization’s website.
