CBC and APTN limited series Bones of Crows (pictured) has garnered the most nominations for the 2024 Leo Awards.
The annual Leo Awards celebrate excellence in B.C.’s film and television industry and are organized by the Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Foundation of British Columbia.
Bones of Crows (Marie Clements Media, Screen Siren Pictures, Grana Productions) picked up 16 nominations overall, including Best Drama Series. It also picked up five performance nominations, as well as recognition for directing and writing for Marie Clements, picture editing, sound, production and costume design, makeup, hairstyling and casting.
The series is a multi-generational drama delving into the harms of the residential school system in Canada. It was also made into a film, which won 10 awards at last year’s Leo Awards.
Other nominees for Best Dramatic Series are Global’s Family Law (SEVEN24 Films, Lark Productions), which has seven nominations overall; Transplant (Sphere Media), which is also up for Best Screenwriting for Joseph Kay and Rachel Langer; Netflix’s Firefly Lane, totalling six nominations; and the CW Network’s Riverdale with four overall nods.
Family Law‘s nominations include four in Best Screenwriting for Corey Liu, Susin Nielsen, Sonja Bennett and Ken Craw, as well as Best Direction for Andy Mikita and Best Lead Performance for Jewel Staite.
Another top nominee in the Dramatic Series category is CTV’s Sight Unseen (Sisters Troubetzkoy Productions, Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures), picking up six nominations. They include Best Direction for Jem Garrard, as well as nods for picture editing, makeup, guest performance and two for hairstyling.
CBC’s Wild Cards (Blink49 Studios, Front Street Pictures, Piller/Segan) garnered four nominations, including Best Lead Performance for Vanessa Morgan, and nods in picture editing and production and costume design.
Leading nominations in the Motion Picture category is the drama Re: Uniting (Flat Head Films), written and directed by Laura Adkin. The film garnered 12 nominations total, including Best Motion Picture, and writing and directing nods for Adkin. It also picked up three performance nominations, as well as for cinematography, picture editing, sound, casting and production and costume design.
Other nominees for Best Motion Picture are Corey Payette’s Les Filles Du Roi (Urban Ink Productions) and Caitlyn Sponheimer’s Wild Goat Surf (Raging River Films, 104 Entertainment) with eight nominations apiece; Kim Albright’s With Love And A Major Organ (Common Knowledge Films) with five; and Bishal Dutta’s It Lives Inside (Brightlight Pictures) and Arran Shearing’s King Baby (Ghost City Films, Greendale Productions) with four each. The films all swept the Best Direction category.
The Leo Awards will take place at the Hyatt Regency Vancouver on July 6 and 7. A full list of nominees is on the awards website.
