Minister of Canadian Heritage Pascale St-Onge (pictured) has unveiled the advisory committee selected to work with the federal government on its review of CBC/Radio-Canada’s mandate.
The seven-person committee will work with the Minister to discuss the pubcaster’s funding, governance and mandate, according to a news release.
The committee includes TV5 CEO Marie-Philippe Bouchard; Jesse Wente, founding executive director of the Indigenous Screen Office and chair of the Canada Council for the Arts; DigiBC executive director Loc Dao; Pink Triangle Press managing director Jennifer McGuire; The Logic CEO and editor-in-chief David Skok; and professors Mike Ananny (communications and journalism) and Catalina Briceno (audiovisual, digital media).
St-Onge told delegates at Prime Time in Ottawa in February that the Department of Heritage would be working with an expert committee on its planned review of CBC/Radio-Canada’s mandate, rather than hold public consultations. At the time, the Minister said she had an 18-month timeline to update the mandate.
“Canadians need a strong, innovative and independent public broadcaster that is ready to meet the challenges of this period of transformation and upheaval in news and content creation,” said St-Onge in a statement. “This advisory committee, with its diverse perspectives and experiences, will help me fulfil my mandate to modernize CBC/Radio-Canada. It will be able to better promote our culture, our stories, our languages, our artists, and our creators, while adapting to our rapidly changing broadcast and digital landscape.”
