R omance drama Darkest Miriam and the feature documentaries Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story and Made in Ethiopia are among the Canadian titles set to make their world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June.
The festival unveiled its features lineup on Wednesday (April 17), which includes 103 films from 48 countries.
Darkest Miriam is written and directed by Toronto-based Naomi Jaye and based on the novel by Martha Baillie. The film will debut in the Viewpoints section, which showcases boundary-pushing works. Younger Daughter Films’ Julie Baldassi and Low End’s Brian Robertson are producers. Executive producers include Aditya Chand, Jonas Prupas, Dean Perlmutter, Charles and Martha Baillie, Harland Weiss, Donovan M. Boden, Isil Gilderdale, Emily Harris and Stephanie Hickman.
The film follows the story of a woman who, amidst her growing love-affair with a young cab driver, receives a series of threatening letters. The cast includes Britt Lower, Tom Mercier, Sook-Yin Lee and Jean Yoon.
Darkest Miriam is produced in association with Singapore-based studio Through The Lens Entertainment, with participation from Telefilm Canada, and Ontario Creates. Game Theory Films is the Canadian distributor.
Written and directed by Alison Duke, the Crave original doc Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story centres on the legacy of Jamaican recording artist Sister Nancy and her track “Bam Bam.” Duke and Ngardy Conteh George produced under their Oya Media Group banner, and also executive produced alongside Carlyn Klebuc, Sarah Fowlie and Tina Apostolopoulos-Moniz.
Bam Bam: The Sister Nancy Story will premiere in Spotlight+, which is accompanied by live conversations and performances after each screening. The doc was first announced as part of Bell Media’s 2021 upfronts.
Made in Ethiopia, written and directed by journalists Xinyan Yu and Max Duncan will debut in the Documentary Competition. The film is coproduced by Toronto’s Gobez Media, U.S.-based Hard Truth Film and U.K.’s Dogwoof. Financing and production partners also include Ethiopia, Denmark and South Korea. Executive producers include Anna Godas, Oli Harbottle, Susan Jakes, Mehret Mandefro and Roger Graef.
Made in Ethiopia looks at China’s impact on Africa through the story of a businesswoman who is tasked with expanding the biggest Chinese industrial zone in Ethiopia.
The 23rd edition of Tribeca will run from June 5 to 16.
