Women in Film and Television Atlantic (WIFT-AT) has named the 2024 Wave Award winners ahead of the annual Making Waves conference.
The awards celebrate women and gender-diverse individuals working in Atlantic Canada’s screen sector. This year’s winners include Epekwitk/P.E.I.-based filmmaker and editor Mille Clarkes, Nova Scotia editor Amy Mielke and Atlantic International Film Festival executive director Martha Cooley.
The winners will be feted during the Making Waves conference in Halifax, running from April 19 to 20. The annual conference is geared toward supporting gender equality in the film and TV industry in Atlantic Canada.
FilmPEI selects 2024 Film4Ward projects
FilmPEI has unveiled the four projects selected for the 2024 Film4Ward training program.
The initiative is an incubator for short scripted and documentary films based in P.E.I., with selected filmmakers able to take part in workshops, consultations and mentorships in order to build up the local talent infrastructure. Each participant will work with an industry mentor.
The titles include Hearse from Jessica Gallant, Sunshine on His Face by Jeana MacIsaac, North Homard from Amy Sobol and Iceboats – The Drowning of Lem Dawson by Al MacDonald.
The skills training program runs until July, with projects to be delivered by July 26, according to the program guidelines.
Shamier Anderson, Stephan James honoured in Scarborough
Actors and the Black Academy founders Shamier Anderson and Stephan James were inducted to the Scarborough Walk of Fame on April 10. The ceremony was held by the Scarborough Town Centre and also honoured another seven members of the Scarborough, Ont. community for achievement in excellence in their respective fields.
Anderson is known for roles in Apple TV+ series Invasion and Syfy’s Wynonna Earp, as well as films such as John Wick: Chapter Four and Stowaway. James earned an Emmy nomination in 2020 for the short-form series #FreeRayshawn, and has also starred in series such as Apple TV+’s Beacon 23 and Prime Video’s Homecoming, and films like If Beale Street Could Talk and Selma.
