Pop-up sound stage opens in Sudbury

The facility was created via a partnership between L.A.'s Volume Global and Capreol, Ont.'s White Owl Film Studios.

Volume Global has opened a 20,000 square foot sound stage in Sudbury, Ont., in partnership with Capreol, Ont.-based White Owl Film Studios.

The L.A.-based pop-up sound stage expert announced that the facility has opened as of March 30, with plans to serve productions in northern Ontario. The sound stage was first announced last October.

The facility is operating on Wahnapitae First Nation territory and is billed as the first air-supported pop-up sound stage in Canada. It will be customized with an LED volume wall for virtual production, according to a news release.

Employment and skills training opportunities for local Indigenous community members are being offered following the opening of the sound stage, with the aim to create a local filmmaking community.

“This collaborative initiative will offer substantial support to local communities, that will help increase economic growth, and create significant job opportunities in Northern Ontario,” said White Owl Film Studios CEO Roy Roque in a statement.

Volume Global previously built a pop-up sound stage in Yonkers, New York via a partnership with Great Point Studios and Lionsgate. These pop-up facilities are custom-designed to meet regional needs and can be “designed, manufactured and assembled within 120 days,” according to the company’s website.
