WildBrain’s Family Channel has acquired the Canada/Belgium live-action series Beyond Black Beauty for English Canada audiences.
Sinking Ship Entertainment (SSE) announced new sales for the series on Wednesday (Feb. 21), with Dutch network RTL Nederland also acquiring the series for release later this year. Beyond Black Beauty will air on Family Channel on March 19.
The series is a copro between Toronto-based SSE and Leif Films, and Belgium-based Saga Film. It was greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios in 2022 for a U.S. and U.K. release on its AVOD Freevee.
Beyond Black Beauty is a coming-of-age series inspired by the 1877 novel Black Beauty from Anna Sewell. It follows a young equestrian who finds her life upended when she moves from Belgium to Baltimore, where she forms a strong bond with a horse at a local ranch.
The series stars Kaya Coleman (The Sinners), Sagine Sémajuste (13: The Musical), Lisa Berry (Workin’ Moms) and Gina James (Transplant).
“This inspiring Canadian drama is a welcome addition to our slate of authentic and engaging live-action content,” said Katie Wilson, WildBrain Television’s VP, channels and global acquisitions, in a statement. “With themes of love and multi-generational bonds, this heartwarming coming-of-age series perfectly updates a beloved classic for today’s audiences.”
