Buffalo 8 acquires U.S. rights to Daughter of the Sun

The supernatural feature from Ryan Ward is produced by Manitoba's Memory Pill Films and recently screened at EFM.

Santa Monica, Calif. distributor Buffalo 8 has acquired the U.S. rights to supernatural drama Daughter of the Sun from Manitoba-based Memory Pill Films.

Ryan Ward (Evil Dead: The Musical) wrote, directed and stars in the film, which is the tale of a 12-year-old girl (Nyah Perkin) living on the run with her father, Sonny (Ward), who grapples with Tourette Syndrome and harbours a volatile superpower. It is a continuation of Ward’s first feature Son of the Sunshine, and is expected to be the second in a trilogy.

Additional cast members include Lennox Leacock, Courtney Sawyer, Laura Mac (Yellowjackets) and Ryan Giesen (What Lurks Beneath).

Red Water Entertainment has previously secured Canadian rights, while Indiecan International is handling worldwide sales.

The film screened at the European Film Market (EFM) as a part of Telefilm’s Perspective Canada program during the Berlin International Film Festival. It previously made its world premiere at Montreal’s Fantasia Film Festival, where it took home an Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature.

“Bringing Daughter of the Sun to EFM is a milestone,” said Mackenzie Leigh, producer at Memory Pill, in a statement. “The project embodies our ethos of bold, unconventional, and elevated storytelling. Seeing it come to life with comparisons to the work of Terrence Malick and Chloé Zhao is truly gratifying and confirms its appeal in international markets.”
