Prime Video commissions scripted series from Martin Matte

The Quebec comedian is writing the scripted series based on his father's life, and will also star and produce.

Prime Video has commissioned a dramedy from Quebec comedian and actor Martin Matte.

The untitled series is written by Matte in collaboration with François Avard and produced by Montreal’s Encore and Matte TV for Amazon MGM Studios.

Set in the 1990s, the series is based on the life of Matte’s father and will be filmed in Quebec. Matte will star as the father, with the show’s title, full cast and release date to be announced at a later date, according to a press release.

Matte rose to fame with the 90-minute comedy special Martin Matte: Condamne a l’excellence, and created and starred in the popular scripted comedy series Les beaux malaises, with the first three seasons currently available to stream on Prime Video.

The comedian said in a statement that he has been thinking about the story of the new Prime Video series for 15 years, which follows the time period of when he worked for his father at the family glaziery.

“He was at the top of his game. He had his wife, a successful business, two kids working for him, a nice house and car, an enviable life. Although when he reached the top, everything started to fall apart. The series will explore the ins and out of that life-changing time. All with a sense of humour, of course,” said Matte.

Brent Haynes, head of originals, Prime Video, Canada, noted that “adding an exceptional performer like Martin Matte to our diverse slate will only further enhance our platform as a home for top talent in the province.”

The series will add to Prime Video’s roster of French-language content, which includes LOL: Qui rira le dernier?, Nuit Blanche and Elisabeth Rioux: sans filtre.
