9 Story Media Group acquires Portfolio Entertainment assets

The deal sees co-founder Lisa Olfman join 9 Story as an executive producer, where she will continue to oversee active Portfolio projects.

Toronto-headquartered 9 Story Media Group has acquired the library, production slate and development projects of Portfolio Entertainment.

The Portfolio distribution library features more than 550 half-hours of content, including kids and family titles such as The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That, Hero Elementary, Addison and Carl Squared. Recent additions include the live-action family series Homeschooled, as well as the prime-time animated comedy Doomsday Brothers.

The acquisition, which closed on Feb. 2, brings 9 Story’s total distribution library to nearly 5,000 half-hours. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

9 Story will also take on Portfolio’s slate of development projects, including those in active development with broadcasters. The company will also take over production on the 8 x 22-minute series Breaking Bear, an adult animated series for Tubi that is currently in pre-production with Cartel Entertainment and Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars.

Portfolio Entertainment was founded in Toronto in 1991 by Lisa Olfman (pictured) and the late Joy Rosen. Olfman will join 9 Story in an executive producer role, reporting to 9 Story president and CEO Vince Commisso. She will continue to oversee all active Portfolio projects and has been tasked with broadening 9 Story’s opportunities across key business areas.

Lauren Evans-Bell, associate producer at Portfolio, will join 9 Story as a development manager and associate producer.

“We are so pleased to be working with Lisa to bring the Portfolio library and current slates under the 9 Story umbrella,” said Commisso. “Lisa and Joy created an incredible legacy of entertainment properties, and we are honoured to continue this work in partnership with Lisa.”
