UBCP/ACTRA names 2023 awards recipients

Performers from Golden Delicious and The Night Agent were among the winners at the 12th annual awards.

Ten screen performers took home a new piece of hardware from the 12th annual UBCP/ACTRA Awards on Saturday (Nov. 25).

Hosted at Vancouver’s Commodore Ballroom, more than 700 actors and film industry professionals attended the ceremony that highlighted talent across eight categories, including Best Performance in a Motion Picture and Best Stunt Performance. There were 67 nominees in total.

Cardi Wong was awarded Best Lead Performance in a Motion Picture for his role in Jason Karman’s Golden Delicious, a queer drama feature following a high school basketball star.

For Best Lead Performance in a Series, Sarah Chalke earned her award for her role in Firefly Lane, the Netflix TV drama also starring Katherine Heigl.

Best Supporting Performance for a Motion Picture went to June B. Wilde for Blood. It’s not the first time Wilde has been nominated for her role as Helen in the film; she was also named as a nominee for Best Supporting Female Performance at the Leo Awards earlier this year.

Gabrielle Rose took home the award for Best Supporting Performance in a Series for The Night Agent, a Netflix action-thriller. The series was also recognized with Best Stunt Performance Award, which went to stunt performers Matt Mylrea, Gerald Paetz and Chris Webb. The stunt coordinator was Mike Mitchell.

Best Performance in a Made for Television film went to Greyston Holt for his work in House of Chains, a feature thriller based on the true story of the Turpin family, also starring Mena Suvari.

Best Short Performance went to Jess McLeod for their role in A Little Vacation, a short film that details a young woman’s suicide attempt and ensuing discharge from a psych ward. McLeod is also the co-writer of the script.

Finally, Best Voice Performance was awarded to Ian Hanlin for his work on Mainframe Studios’ kid-targeted YouTube series The Guava Juice Show.

On top of the eight categories, the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award was also presented. Susan Hogan, whose credits include Virgin River, Heartland and The Butterfly Effect 2, took the honour for her work and accomplishments in the industry.

“Every year when the clips come together for the awards show, I am always amazed at the remarkable talent we have here in B.C.,” said Ellie Harvie, UBCP/ACTRA president and ACTRA National councillor, in a statement.
