IPF supports nine short-form series with $1.8M

The series will receive production support and training under the Short Form Series Production Program.

The Independent Production Fund (IPF) has selected nine projects for its 2023 Short Form Series Production Program.

The nine short-form series will receive a total of $1.8 million, as well as consultation, training and advisory services, and were narrowed down from 187 applications submitted to IPF in March. A 28-member committee selected the projects, made up of a jury of evaluators and IPF board members.

Of the nine selected projects, six are English-language series and the remaining three are French-language.

Five of the English-language projects come from Ontario, including three mystery-thrillers: Dying Seconds from the prodco Space Mop (Davin Lengyel, Brendan Halloran); Thread from Archipelago Productions (Maeve Kern, Nicholas Ewart, Jana Stackhouse, Christopher Yip); and Petra P.I. from White Wolves Studio (Faith Leleu, Chloe Campion).

The other two Ontario series are dramedies: Rent-A-Girlfriend from It’s A Secret Productions (Ariel Yang, John Tan); and Sweet as Sugar from Jane Loughman’s Monkeys & Parrots.

Rounding out the English short-form series is B.C.-based comedy Novelette is Trying from Orange Rose Productions (Giselle Miller, Nancy Kamar).

Of the three French-language series, two hail from Quebec: the comedy Ils sont parmi nous from Pixcom (Véronique Paquette-Corriveau, Charles Lafortune, Nicola Merola, Justine Philie, Jérôme Léger, Raphaël Côté); and the drama T-Rex from Inséparables films (Jérémie Boucher, Gabriel Savignac, Louis-Philippe Vachon).

The other French-language project is the dramedy Les faillites d’Astrid from Manitoba-based Ray Films (Danielle Sturk, Elena Sturk-Lussier).
