WildBrain plucks new Strawberry Shortcake deals

Global buyers have picked up a number of titles from the brand, including the new Netflix special Strawberry Shortcake and the Beast of Berry Bog.

WildBrain has secured new content and licensing deals for the Strawberry Shortcake brand ahead of the launch of a series of Netflix specials.

The Halloween-themed Strawberry Shortcake and the Beast of Berry Bog (WildBrain Studios; pictured) is the first of four 44-minute seasonal specials that were commissioned by Netflix in 2021. All four specials have been sold to free-to-air channels Gulli in France and TV2 in Hungary, Romania and Slovakia, while NCircle Entertainment has picked up U.S. home entertainment rights.

The special will make its broadcast premiere in Canada on the WildBrain-owned channel Family Jr. on Sept. 22, followed by the Netflix debut on Oct. 2. The remaining specials will be released across 2023 and 2024.

Australian OTT service Stan has picked up a raft of animated Strawberry Shortcake content from the franchise, including original series Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City (120 x 4 minutes), Berry Bitty Adventures (65 x 22 minutes), and the animated films Strawberry Shortcake: Sky’s the Limit – which also sold to SVOD Edye for Latin America (LatAm) and the Caribbean, and the JimJam channel in the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) – and Strawberry Shortcake: The Sweet Dreams Movie.

Edye has also picked up season one of Berry Bitty Adventures, along with Viaplay (Nordics) and Semillitas (U.S. and Central America), and Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City.

NCircle, meanwhile, has picked up U.S. home entertainment rights for the first three seasons of Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City. Additional buyers are TV2 (Hungary, Romania and Slovakia), Spacetoon (MENA), and TVNZ (New Zealand). A deal with Amazon Kids+ in the U.S. was announced earlier this year.

Spacetoon has also developed a live version of the animated series for the MENA region as part of a licensing agreement, with the first performance debuting at the Qatar Toy Festival in July. The series has also been featured in a new mobile game from Spain’s Tap Tap Tales.
