Filmmaker Alex Caulfield is rolling on their debut feature, What Comes Next, in Vancouver.
The film is written and directed by Caulfield, and comes from B.C.-based prodcos Black Moon Media and Screen Siren Pictures. Production is underway across a number of B.C locations, including the Greater Vancouver area, Langley and Maple Ridge.
Kate Kroll and Tony Cerciello are producers, while Trish Dolman and Steven Thibault are executive producers. Telefilm Canada has provided production support.
What Comes Next stars Alison Thornton (Nancy Drew), Mena Suvari (American Beauty; pictured), Aaron Ashmore (Ginny & Georgia), Maya Chariandy (The Good Doctor) and Stephen Lobo (Snowpiercer). The coming-of-age story follows a 17-year-old girl (Thornton) who has an ill-advised relationship with an older family friend (Ashmore) before she goes to college, not realizing that the same man had an affair with her mother (Suvari) a decade earlier.
The film received an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA to move ahead with production, due to the ongoing strike.
The project marks the debut feature from Caulfield, whose recent credits include the Lifetime television movie The Podcast Murders, as well as the short films Dear Departed (2021), Do We Leave This Here and Last Night.
Caulfield is an alum of the National Screen Institute and Whistler Film Festival Talent Labs. They were awarded a Creator Mentorship from the Geena Davis Institute.
