Beth Janson steps down as TIFF COO

A spokesperson for TIFF confirmed to Playback that Janson's resignation was communicated to the team this week.

Beth Janson has stepped down as chief operating officer of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

A TIFF spokesperson confirmed Janson’s departure to Playback Daily, noting that her resignation was communicated to staff this week. Her resignation comes less than a month before this year’s edition of the annual film festival, which begins Sept. 7.

TIFF also confirmed that Elisabeth Burks resigned as VP of partnerships earlier this month. The spokesperson said there are currently no plans to fill the positions, but “we’ll reassess in the fall, after TIFF.”

Janson joined TIFF as COO last April, having previously served as CEO of the Canadian Academy of Cinema and Television for more than five years. She previously worked as a programmer at the Newport International Film Festival and, later, the Tribeca Film Institute, where she served for five years as executive director.

Burks started at the festival last January, where she was tasked with driving revenue growth and working closely with the fest’s longtime partners. Prior to joining TIFF, she handled partnerships at Samsung Canada, having earlier worked as head of marketing and partnerships at the TD Toronto Jazz Festival.
