All3Media International secures rights to Paul Kemp’s Bitcoin doc

London-based All3Media International has acquired the distribution rights to Canadian filmmaker Paul Kemp’s feature documentary on the disappearance of Bitcoin’s creator.

Searching for Satoshi: The Mysterious Disappearance of the Bitcoin Creator was commissioned by the CBC for its documentary strand The Passionate Eye and is set to premiere later this year, according to a news release. It is produced in association with CBC and All3Media International, with Kemp (pictured) serving as executive producer under his Paul Kemp Productions banner.

Rachel Job, SVP, non-scripted, All3Media International, said in a statement that “partnerships with acclaimed producers such as Paul Kemp Productions are integral to our strategy to grow our slate of high-end, globally relevant, premium documentary features, and this intriguing film will be a perfect fit for a wide range of broadcasters and platforms around the world.”

The filmmaking team will tap into insights from expert commentators, authors, podcasters, established traders, and Bitcoin miners for the “cinematic-style documentary,” exploring the mysterious identity of the Bitcoin inventor — who goes by the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto — and his disappearance and motives. The doc will also examine the current state of Bitcoin and “uncover the main Satoshi candidates: two dead and three alive,” added the release.

“As Bitcoin continues its staggering growth across the world, I can guarantee that the myth of Satoshi will only intensify,” said Kemp.

Kemp’s other films include CBC’s The Pretendians (Counterfeit NDN Productions, in association with Paul Kemp Productions), which won the Donald Brittain Award for Best Social/Political Documentary Program at the Canadian Screen Awards this past April, and Nike’s Big Bet: Alberto Salazar and the Fine Line of Sport (Paul Kemp Productions, Cream Films), among others.
