Crave settles into Nesting as production kicks off in Toronto

The 8 x 8-minute comedy is produced by Toronto-based Project Undertow and created by Rosa Labordé and Anna Hardwick, with Allana Harkin as director.

Production has hatched in Toronto on Nesting, a Crave original short-form series directed by Emmy Award-winning producer Allana Harkin of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee fame.

Principal photography is underway on the 8 x 8-minute comedy, produced by Toronto-based Project Undertow and created by Rosa Labordé (pictured left; The Spencer Sisters) and Anna Hardwick (pictured right; Murdoch Mysteries), who also serve as co-writers, co-stars and executive producers.

Labordé is the series’ showrunner, while Harkin is also an executive producer, according to a news release. The team includes Tara Ellis (Hey Lady!) and Michael Kessler (Hannibal) as producers and executive producers. Filming will take place over eight days.

Loosely inspired by the experiences of the series creators, Nesting is described as “provocative comedy” about two unlikely best friends who try to get pregnant at the same time as a means to create “a new version of family.”

The series is Crave’s “first-ever short form series,” according to a news release issued during its upfront earlier this month.

Other cast members include Salvatore Antonio (Schitt’s Creek), Samer Salem (Yellowjackets), Ryan Allen (Titans), Paul Popowich (The Spencer Sisters), Lisa Berry (Slasher), Carlos Gonzalez-Vio (The Hot Zone), Nicola Correia-Damude (The Boys), Rachel Wilson (The Hardy Boys), Alexandra Castillo (Rabbit Hole), and Mike Shara (Ride).

Nesting marks Project Undertow’s foray into digital, TV and film production, after producing theatre for 15 years as a multi-disciplinary, artist-run creative collective, said the release.

In a joint statement, Labordé and Hardwick explained the series was born nine years ago at a friend’s engagement party.

“We were commiserating over our disastrous dating lives and wondering if we’d ever find our person and have a family,” they said. “Our mutual rumination was kinda wrecking the party so we hatched a plan: if we were in the same place in a few years we’d move in and have a baby together. We agreed it was an amazing idea… for a show.”
