Titan1Studios, Abdul Malik developing climate crisis series

Breaking Point
Breaking Point is a globe-trotting six-episode procedural expected to be filmed in Alberta.

Toronto’s Titan1Studios has partnered with screenwriter Abdul Malik to develop a “globe-spanning” climate crisis procedural for TV.

Breaking Point is developed by Malik, who is also an executive producer alongside Rathan Moorthy, founder and CEO of Titan1Studios, and Wes Ambrecht, VP, content, according to a press release.

The series follows a “cynical” scientist who is forced to team up with his estranged daughter, after being tasked to lead a climate task force of diverse international operatives as they “tackle everything from a drought in Pakistan to a chemical leak in Ohio” and rescue people caught in disasters, said the release.

Breaking Point  will be shot over six episodes in Alberta, with its diverse landscapes doubling as international locations, Ambrecht tells Playback Daily, adding that Titan1 is open to “a potential international copro model” and filming at other locations “should the opportunity arise.” He added in a statement that the series has “global stakes and mass appeal but is also firmly anchored in Canada.”

Malik, a Playback 10 to Watch alum whose writing credits include CTV’s Transplant and the feature Peace by Chocolate, said in a statement that the series “speaks to ideas of climate justice that I care about deeply,” and “does so with hope, a light touch, and a keen sense of uplifting possibility.”

“I love exciting, tense stories such as this one — but it’s my firm belief that stories this topical must show us a better way forward instead of engaging in the pessimism which often makes us feel powerless … it’s a new turn on procedural story that I’m really excited for the world to see,” he added.

Ambrecht said Breaking Point “nods to some of our favourite series of yesteryear like House M.D. and Flashpoint, while also reflecting on the world around us and projecting forward to a future that we hope will be better than our present.”

Malik’s current projects include the labour movement drama Salt (marblemedia/Fae Pictures) and The Unquiet Dead (Shaftesbury). He recently signed a first-look deal with Toronto’s Neshama Entertainment.

He is represented by META Talent Agency and Rain Management Group.
