M att Johnson’s Canadian film BlackBerry continues to ping the register at the box office, grossing more than $1 million in Canada and $3 million overall in North America after three weekends in theatres.
The smartphone dramedy that hit theatres in Canada on May 12 had a gross of C$1,073,816 as of Tuesday (May 30), according to the latest numbers in Comscore’s weekly box office report.
The box office report, which was provided to Playback Daily by Canadian distributor Elevation Pictures, is based on flash data that’s collected by Comscore directly from theatres.
In Comscore’s wider North American weekend studio estimates chart issued on Monday (May 29), the Rhombus Media and Zapruder Films production had an estimated cumulative gross of US$2,344,035 (about C$3,187,350) and sat at No. 15 on the Top 30 chart.

Matthew Miller — who also co-wrote the screenplay and leads Zapruder Films with Johnson — produced BlackBerry alongside by Niv Fichman, Fraser Ash and Kevin Krikst of Toronto’s Rhombus Media.
The film was produced with the participation of Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates, in association with CBC Films and Finland’s IPR.VC, and XYZ Films.
IFC Films has U.S. distribution rights.
Johnson, Jay Baruchel and Glenn Howerton star in the story of the Canadian company that invented the BlackBerry mobile device.
BlackBerry grossed more than $300,000 at the Canadian box office during its opening weekend, becoming the largest opening weekend for a Canadian film since PAW Patrol: The Movie‘s $1.9 million in 2021, according to Elevation.
The last Canadian film to cross the $1 million mark at the box office in Canada was the 3D-animated film Katak, the Brave Beluga, directed by Christine Dallaire-Dupont and Nicola Lemay, written by Andrée Lambert, and produced by Nancy Florence Savard of Quebec City’s 10th Ave Productions. It hit that threshold in March following its second weekend in theatres.
