Jennica Harper, Nelu Handa to co-lead CBC’s Run the Burbs

The Jann writers will reunite as co-showrunners of the comedy's third season.

Comedy scribes Jennica Harper and Nelu Handa have been tapped as executive producers and co-showrunners for season three of CBC comedy Run the Burbs.

The series is co-created by star and executive producer Andrew Phung and EP Scott Townend, and produced by Toronto’s Pier 21 Films. It was renewed for a third season in March, which will go into production later this year.

Season three of Run the Burbs is scheduled to air on CBC in winter 2024. The series, about a Vietnamese-South Asian family living in the suburbs, is distributed by Fifth Season.

Harper and Handa previously collaborated on three seasons of the CTV comedy Jann, in which Harper served as showrunner.

Handa was writer and co-executive producer on season two of Run the Burbs, and has also written for series such as Peabody-winning CBC comedy Sort Of, sketch comedy series Baroness von Sketch Show and TallBoyz, and NBC late night series A Little Late with Lilly Singh.

Harper’s other past credits include writer and co-executive producer on CTV’s The Spencer Sisters, CBC and Paramount+ medical drama SkyMed, and Netflix’s sci-fi series The Order.

Anthony Farrell was showrunner for season two, while Shebli Zarghami was at the helm in season one.

Laszlo Barna, Nicole Butler, Karen Tsang and Vanessa Steinmetz are executive producers on behalf of Pier 21 Films, while Jay Vaidya is co-executive producer.

Writers on season three include Phung, Townend, Handa, Harper, Vaidya, Sara Peters, Angelica Mendizabal and Mandeq Hassan.

Phung said Handa’s experiences “have greatly added to the development of the show and its characters,” in a statement, adding that Harper “brings such joy and relatability to the writers room.”
