Our Big Punjabi Family is ready to make its big bow with a world premiere at the SeriesFest in Denver, Colorado.
The Regina-shot series (pictured) by Saskatoon, Sask.-based prodco KarmaFilm will debut in the Independent Pilot Competition on Sunday (May 7) and is one of three Canadian titles at the festival.
The 6 x 30-minute Punjabi- and English-language family comedy is created by showrunner Leena Manro and Agam Darshi, who also direct and serve as executive producers on the series. Also directing is Anna McRoberts, while Sara B. Cooper serves as consulting producer.
It was produced by Anand Ramayya and Kelly Balon with the support of the Canada Media Fund, Creative Saskatchewan and Creative BC.
L.A.-based executive producer Doug Mankoff of Echo Lake Entertainment is handling foreign sales for Our Big Punjabi Family. A Canadian broadcaster has not been announced as of press time.
The cast is led by Arshdeep Purba and Arkinder “Arkie” Kandola, and also includes Bushra Ansari, Bhavkhandan “BK” Singh Rakhra, Balinder Johal, Rakhi Sharma, Navneet Kaur, and Jag Bal.
In the Digital Short Series competition of the festival are Toronto-based iThentic’s Revenge of the Black Best Friend (6 x 15 minutes) and the six-part semi-reality series The Stu Sessions from Toronto’s AstroLab Studio.
Created by Amanda Parris, the Canadian Screen Award-winning Revenge of the Black Best Friend is a satirical look at the stereotypes attached to Black characters onscreen. Parris is also an executive producer on the series alongside Jonas Diamond, Julian De Zotti and Wendy “Motion” Brathwaite. Thyrone Tommy, Jerome Kruin and Ian Keteku are directors.
The Stu Sessions documents AstroLab Studios founder Adam Weitner as he tries to help his friend, Canadian actor/director Stu Stone, revive his rap music career. The series was created and executive produced by Jeffrey Hanley, Stu Stone, Adam Weitner and Cody Marcotte, and is directed by Hanley.
Bones of Crows, a residential school drama by Vancouver-based Screen Siren Pictures, is also in the International Spotlight strand of the festival.
It is written and directed by Marie Clements and was produced into a five-part CBC miniseries.
The ninth edition of SeriesFest will run from May 5 to 10.
