CTV Sci-Fi’s Astrid & Lilly Save the World, CBC’s Sort Of and CBC Gem’s Fakes lead nominations for the 27th annual Writers Guild of Canada (WGC) Screenwriting Awards.
This year’s awards – the first to be held in-person in four years – will take place on April 24 at Koerner Hall in Toronto, hosted by comedian, actor and writer Vance Banzo (TallBoyz).
Astrid & Lilly Save the World (pictured) dominated the Tweens & Teens category with three nominations – one for Alix Markman, another for Veronika Paz, and a shared nod for Betsy Van Stone and Noelle Stehman – followed by nominations for Laura Seaton and Heather Taylor for YTV’s The Hardy Boys and Courtney Jane Walker for Family Channel’s Holly Hobbie.
Both Sort Of and Fakes earned two nominations apiece in the Comedy Series category, with Sort Of‘s Jenn Engels earning a nod, along with a co-nod for Kyah Green and Léa Geronimo Rondot. Tabia Lau and David Turko each earned a nomination for Fakes. Other comedy nominees are Sonya Ballantyne for CTV Comedy’s Acting Good and Kurt Smeaton for CTV’s Children Ruin Everything.
Laura Good secured two nominations in the Drama Series category for her work on CBC’s Coroner and CTV’s Transplant. The other nominated series in the category all hail from CBC, including Sheri Elwood for Moonshine, Marsha Greene for The Porter, and Tassie Cameron for Pretty Hard Cases.
YTV’s Super Wish and web series The Guava Juice Show also earned two nominations each in the Children’s category. Nominated writers on Super Wish are Mark Steinberg and Tally Knoll, while The Guava Juice Show‘s Christine Mitchell earned a nod, and John Hazlett, Lienne Sawatsky and Dan Williams all received co-nominations. Filling out the category’s nominees are Melody Fox and Tim Shell for Apple TV+ series Circuit Breakers and Andrew De Angelis for TVOKids’ Odd Squad.

Still to be announced is the winner of the Showrunner Award, which will be announced at the awards ceremony. The recognition has previously gone to leading WGC members such as Anthony Q. Farrell (Shelved), Morwyn Brebner (Coroner, Saving Hope), Emily Andras (Wynonna Earp), and others.
