Game Theory Films has hit the gas on Michael Clowater’s drama feature Drive Back Home, starring Emmy-nominated Scottish actor Alan Cumming.

The Toronto-based distributor holds worldwide rights to the film, which goes to camera in North Bay, Ont., on Feb. 27 and wraps in March.

The film is written and directed by New Brunswick-born Clowater, who also serves as executive producer. It is produced by William Woods of Woods Entertainment, Brian Mason of Mason Films and Maddy Falle of Obvious Allegory.

Drive Back Home is produced with support from Telefilm Canada, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, Ontario Creates, Game Theory, Toronto and Vancouver-based Radke Films, and Toronto’s Vigilante Productions. The budget was not disclosed.

Additional executive producers on the film are Vigilante’s Mark Gingras, Radke’s Edie Weiss, Scott Mackenzie and Ilene Bronsteter, Karen O’Brien, and John Laing.

Drive Back Home is set in 1968 and follows a conservative plumber who takes a road trip from Toronto to New Brunswick after bailing his brother out of jail for having sex with a man in a public park. Cumming stars in the film alongside British actor Charlie Creed-Miles and Canadian actor Clare Coulter.

Clowater said the script takes “archetypal characters that would never be in the same movie together and then make them a family,” in a statement.

Game Theory is the Canadian distributor for Riceboy Sleeps, which picked up six Canadian Screen Award nominations on Wednesday (Feb. 22), including Best Motion Picture. The film was sold to several international buyers at the European Film Market earlier this week.
