M ontreal- and Toronto-based distributor Sphere Films has acquired the rights to 2D-animated feature Toopy and Binoo the Movie and plans to release it theatrically in August.
The Canadian children’s film is based on the popular Toopy and Binoo books by Dominique Jolin, who also wrote and directed the big-screen version along with Raymond Lebrun. Jolin and Lebrun also co-wrote the Toopy and Binoo animated series, which was produced by Montreal-based Echo Media and sold in more than 175 countries.
Series producer Luc Châtelain from Echo Media is also the producer of the film, which will hit theatres nationwide on Aug. 11, according to a news release.
Toopy and Binoo the Movie is produced with the financial contribution of SODEC, the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit, the Canada Media Fund, the Shaw Rocket Fund, the Canadian Film or Video Tax Credit, Le Fonds Harold Greenberg and Telefilm Canada.
Alejandra Argañaraz and Pierre Houde are the art directors on the project.
The film will see Canadian voice actor Frank Meschkuleit reprise his role as Toopy, an impulsive mouse who’s best friends with lovable cat Binoo. Together, they try to find Binoo’s beloved stuffed animal, Patchy-Patch, after it disappears. More information on the project is to come, said the release.
Toopy and Binoo: The Movie is also bound for a broadcast on Treehouse, after being announced as a greenlight by Corus Entertainment at its upfront in May 2021. The Toopy and Binoo series also aired on Treehouse in English, while the French-language version aired on Télé-Québec.
