Crime dramedy Pretty Hard Cases will end its run on CBC with its third season.
The public broadcaster has confirmed to Playback Daily in a statement that it has decided not to renew the series for a fourth season.
“Pretty Hard Cases reimagined the police procedural with timely storylines, a distinct sense of humour and a refreshingly authentic take on female friendship,” said Sally Catto, general manager, entertainment, factual and sports, CBC. “While we have made the difficult decision not to renew the series, we want to thank Tassie Cameron, Sherry White, Amy Cameron, Meredith MacNeill, Adrienne C. Moore and the entire cast and crew for three wonderful seasons.”
Toronto production company Cameron Pictures initially announced the news via Twitter on Wednesday (Feb. 8), stating “we are very sad to share that [Pretty Hard Cases] will not be returning for another season.”
The third season, starring Moore and MacNeill as Toronto detectives who become unlikely partners, premiered on Jan. 4. The remaining five episodes will air as scheduled.
“Thank you to all of the wonderful cast and crew who have made this show a possibility and the fans who have loved Sam and Kelly as much as we have! We hope you enjoy the final episodes,” read the tweet.
The series was created by White (Little Dog) and Tassie Cameron (Rookie Blue), who served as co-showrunners and executive producers. Other executive producers include Cameron Pictures’ Amy Cameron and Alex Patrick, with Wanda Chaffey as producer.
The official Twitter account for the series also shared the cancellation news, adding that it “will not affect the international release of season three” and that the release date for the final season in the U.S. is still to be confirmed.
Pretty Hard Cases was acquired in the U.S. by Amazon’s Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) as its exclusive streaming home south of the border. NBCUniversal Global Distribution handles worldwide distribution, and the first two seasons were also acquired by Netflix Canada.
The first season was one of the most-nominated TV series at the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards, coming in second to fellow CBC series Sort Of with 11 nominations. The series ended up winning Best Stunt Coordination. White and Tassie Cameron also picked up a WGC award in 2022 for penning the episode “Bananas.”
