CBC, HBO Max renew Sort Of for a third season

The Sphere Media-produced series, created by star Bilal Baig and director Fab Filippo, won a Peabody and a flood of other awards in the past year.

CBC and HBO Max comedy Sort Of is capping off a smash year with a renewal for another season.

The season three greenlight, announced Thursday (Dec. 15), comes just weeks after the debut of its second season on CBC and CBC Gem in Canada, and HBO Max in the U.S. It also follows a string of accolades, including a Peabody Award, Program of the Year at the BANFF Rockie Awards, and a Writers Guild of Canada Screenwriting Award.

The 8 x 30-minute show is created by star Bilal Baig and director Fab Filippo, who both serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. It is produced by Sphere Media (formerly Sienna Films) and received financial participation from the Canada Media Fund.

Jennifer Kawaja, Sphere Media’s president of scripted English content, also serves as one of the executive producers.

Sort Of is distributed worldwide by Sphere Media. Abacus Media Rights handles sales outside of the U.S. and Latin America. The story follows a gender-fluid nanny in Toronto.

The series provided six trans and/or non-binary industry talent with paid training and mentorship on the set of its second season.

Baig said in a statement that “it’s been such a creative and rewarding pleasure to sink deeply into the mess of the lives of these characters in season two,” adding that they look forward to “continuing and expanding the mess, alongside Fab, our gifted writers, the generous teams at Sphere Media, CBC and HBO Max, and our gorgeous cast and crew.”

Sally Catto, general manager of entertainment, factual and sports for CBC, added that “Sort Of has made its way into the hearts of viewers and critics in Canada, the U.S. and around the world by embracing universal themes that we can all relate to, no matter who we love or how we self-identify.”
