The Roku Channel has acquired worldwide rights to seasons one and two of Canadian short-form series Tokens.
Created by Winnifred Jong, the 16 x 8-minute satirical comedy will debut on The Roku Channel on Jan. 10, 2023. Season two was previously released for purchase on iTunes and Apple TV on Nov. 29, while season one made its debut on YouTube in 2019.
Tokens is produced by Jong and Trinni Franke, with Jong directing all 16 episodes. Season two is co-written by Jong, Franke and Vincent Lui. The series follows a group of actors who work at an on-call casting agency to help productions meet their diversity quotas. It stars Connie Wang, Ryan Allen, Shelley Thompson and Jessica Greco.
The deal with The Roku Channel was negotiated by levelFILM, which holds worldwide distribution rights to the series.
Jong won a Canadian Screen Award in 2020 for her directing work on the series, in addition to a nomination for writing for a web program or series. Wang and Greco also received performance nominations.
Season two of Tokens was filmed in late 2021. It was produced with financial support from the Canada Media and the Bell Fund, as well as Ontario Creates. Equipment was supplied by William F. White International, MBS Equipment and Sim International.
