TVOKids, Knowledge Network, TFO order Mia & Codie

The Canadian pubcasters have buddied up to greenlight Epic Story Media's STEM-focused preschool series about a girl who creates a robot to be the sibling she always wanted.

Ontario and B.C.-based public broadcasters TVOKids, Knowledge Network and TFO have commissioned a new preschool series called Mia & Codie from Toronto’s Epic Story Media.

Animated by Vancouver’s Relish Studios, the CG-animated series (40 x 4.5 minutes) centres on an eight-year-old girl who builds a robot to be the little brother she has always wanted. Together, Mia and Codie solve everyday problems through coding.

The project will be pitched to other buyers at MIPCOM and is set to premiere in December 2023 on TVOKids, TFO and Knowledge’s linear channel, kids app and website. Don Moody (WordWorld) created Mia & Codie, and Sheila Rogerson (Max & Ruby) is writing the scripts with Renae Ruddock (Piper’s Pony Tales).

Knowledge has also ordered a second season of Epic’s 2D-animated series Luna, Chip and Inkie: Adventure Rangers Go (28 x 11 minutes) and a 22-minute companion special. The show is aimed at children ages four to six and centres on an owl, a beaver and an octopus who solve their neighbours’ problems in Eagle Creek. Each episode in season two will feature an original song written by composer Daniel Ingram (My Little Pony: The Movie).

Shelley Hoffman (Arbuckle) and Robert Pincombe (Lakebottom) are the showrunners, with production support provided by the Canada Media Fund and Shaw Rocket Fund.

The series premiered in April 2021 on Knowledge’s linear channel and digital platforms.
