Sinking Ship Entertainment has teamed up with Toronto-born comedian Samantha Bee (pictured) to develop a new kid-starring sketch comedy show called Best Day Ever.
Sinking Ship and Bee’s prodco, Swimsuit Competition, will collaborate on the live-action series concept created by Emmy-winning producer and actor Allana Harkin (Dino Dan). The show will have 30-minute episodes, and is aimed at kids eight and older.
A sketch show is a first for Toronto’s Sinking Ship. The studio is the producer of live-action series Dino Dana and Endlings, and has been pushing into kids animation with projects such as Builder Brothers’ Dream Factory with Scott Brothers Entertainment for Corus Entertainment.
Harkin, Bee, Swimsuit Competition’s head of development Kristen Everman, and Sinking Ship’s executive producers J.J. Johnson, Blair Powers are producing the series.
The show is inspired by Harkin and Bee’s sketch comedy troupe, which they ran in university, says Sinking Ship’s Johnson. “Twenty years ago, while at university I was lucky enough to film sketches for The Atomic Fireballs, Sam and Allana’s all-female sketch comedy troupe. I’m thrilled that two decades later we get to bring that same brilliant humour to kid audiences everywhere. ”
A single-camera ensemble series, Best Day Ever will star kids and have adults in supporting roles, a casting feature that should set it apart from other sketch shows, according to a release.
Swimsuit Competition produced late-night comedy series Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, which ran for seven seasons on TBS.
