TSN has acquired Serendipity Media’s Indigenous hockey documentary Camp of Dreams and plans to air it in conjunction with Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
Mark Kristofic, Brendan McNeill, Ari Taub and Patrick White executive produced the doc, which was funded by Serendipity Media along with Enlightened Private Capital.
Camp of Dreams features Indigenous Canadian NHL player Ethan Bear and his annual Hockey Skills Camp at the Ochapowace First Nation in southern Saskatchewan, where he was raised.
The Carolina Hurricanes defenceman (pictured right) runs the camp every summer for young hockey players from Ochapowace Nation and surrounding First Nations communities to pave the road for the next generation of Indigenous athletes.
Karen Zylak directed the doc, which will air on TSN1 and TSN5 during the federal statutory holiday on Friday (Sept. 30). “To see first-hand the positive influence Ethan is having on his community and to share that story through Camp of Dreams is an absolute honour,” said Zylak in a statement.
Zylak is also a producer on the new Hubert Davis-directed documentary Black Ice, about the history of anti-Black racism in hockey. The Uninterrupted Canada film made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the People’s Choice Documentary Award.
CBC, APTN and Hollywood Suite are among the other broadcasters planning programming for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
