Creative BC gives $300K to doc, factual grant recipients

The Documentary and Factual Development Fund supports the development of B.C.-owned unscripted IP.

Creative BC has selected 15 documentary and factual grant recipients to support original productions in the province.

The non-profit has allocated just under $300,000 through the Documentary and Factual Development Fund, which is supported by the Rogers Group of Funds.

The fund was created to support B.C.-owned and controlled production companies in the creation of feature-length documentaries, docuseries or factual formats, and does not require a broadcaster or commissioner to trigger funding. It is part of the Reel Focus BC programs by Creative BC to support the development of original IP based in the province for the global market.

Of the 15 recipients, 14 will receive a $20,000 grant, including Wapanatahk Media’s docuseries Indigenous Bucket List; Cedar Island Films’ docuseries A Good War, based on the Seth Klein book A Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency; and Experimental Forest Films and Lantern Films’ documentary Nechako, which was one of three projects supported through the Indigenous stream of Telefilm’s Theatrical Documentary program.

Additional projects to receive $20,000 include Katiba Banat – Sisters in Arms (Adhel Productions), which was also supported by the Canada Media Fund’s Pilot Program for Racialized Communities; Chemical Consent (AGA Films); Asog (Asog Films); The Legend of Jim Wells III (Damien Eagle Bear); At the Penthouse (Diving Bell Films); and the docuseries Dishing (Fat End Productions).

Rounding out the $20,000 grant recipients is the documentary feature King Arthur’s Night (Opus 59 Films), which also picked up funding through Creative BC’s production program; Queer and Muslim (PK Studio Productions); FREEWAY ’67 (self-directed studies); Clan of the Painted Lady (SILO Entertainment); and Spirit of 84 Films’ untitled documentary.

Finally, Kate Green Productions has received $17,725 for the documentary project Safe Haven.

Creative BC has allocated a total of $707,000 through the Documentary and Factual Development Fund since its establishment. The organization recently selected eight projects to receive a total of $595,000 through its production program.
